More importantly they can protect their customers’ data, leading to a more confident and trustworthy relationship with the shipper” states VP of Sales & Marketing, Patrick Scardilli.

Surviving in the competitive terrain, where last-mile delivery can determine top-line growth, requires the optimization of technology. The benefits of using scheduling automation and dispatch management are many and yet 49% of companies in the United States are still using manual systems to manage the dispatch of their field service engineers, according to the Field Service Management Software Survey, published in 2014. One of the biggest reasons for such few businesses implementing technology is the high cost of implementation, according to 47% of the respondents to this survey. However, the remaining 51% acknowledge that optimizing technology is one of the most critical areas for investment and it is only a matter of time before all companies move away from manual scheduling systems.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN DISPATCH MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE

Picture

  • Advanced Integration Capability: Over one third of the respondents of the Field Service Management Software Survey 2014 stated that they found integrating systems to be a problem. Seamless communication between systems could help provide the kind of visibility that is needed to repeatedly meet one’s Key Performance Index. It is therefore imperative to ensure that the software chosen to manage dispatch should integrate with the existing IT structure of the company.
  • Comprehensive Mobility: Cloud-based management software accords mobility to all involved by providing access to data at any time and from anywhere. Incorporating MDM solutions means that existing devices can be used to access crucial data, and at the same time, being protected by data security protocols. Dispatch management software should be able to work seamlessly with the mobile solution for field management.

Picture

  • Intuitive Dashboards: This is often the most overlooked aspect when choosing management software. Asset intensive companies can seldom spare employees for lengthy training and, therefore, the software must be equipped with an intuitive user experience. The courier software provider should have provisions for effective training of personnel, if and when required.
  • Real-Time Updates: Not only should the software allow for automation of dispatch, it should also generate automatic dispatch-to-dispatch communications, synchronized in such a manner that each party concerned can be privy to crucial, time sensitive information. This will save time by eliminating the need for emails, phone calls and faxes. At the same time, scan history should also be just as accessible, so that it can be referred to whenever required.

Same day delivery revenue is expected to reach $620 million, which is six times more than what it was in 2014; according to the principle research analyst at eMarketer, the leading research firm for digital marketers. While the service was prevalent even in 2014, Amazon changed its scope entirely when it made the service free in May 2015. As of May 2015, Amazon delivers on the same day for free for Prime members in 14 metropolitan areas, reported Los Angeles Times. The membership itself will continue to be affordable at an annual charge of $99. Additionally, Amazon has also started to deliver Fresh products in large cities and in doing so, has owned the entire value chain, including “last mile delivery.”

A TREND THAT IS CATCHING ON

Only days after Amazon announced free same day delivery, Google launched Shopping Express in Los Angeles and New York, which provides same day delivery via select retailers. Add to the list eBay, which acquired the UK start-up Shutl, which came into prominence for making use of local couriers to deliver goods in a 1-2 hours window, and you have eBbay Now, delivering on the same day using Shutl’s infrastructure and IT.

While the service is still in its nascent stage, it is bound to grow and become the norm, since it is already setting the bar for customer expectations. Technological advancements too have multiple tiers now – supply chain management through delivery software has become the norm, with the customer’s demands to know the status of their order having nuanced considerably. However, technology is not limited to just information now. With the sci-fi come-to-life delivery by drones option materializing, as in the case of Amazon Prime Air, the sky is the limit for truly disruptive logistics.

OTHER AREAS FUELED BY DISRUPTIVE LOGISTICS

  • Omnichannel Fulfillment: “Omni-channel Fulfillment is the key driver of growth in the warehouse management market,” reported Forbes in June 2014. A year later, with same day delivery becoming the rage, it is becoming part and parcel of the experience. In a world where customers want to buy online and pick-up at a store; try on at the store and have the desired variation delivered to their door; or place an order online and expect to not just be apprised of whether it is in stock but also what stage of delivery it is at and exactly when it will reach them or for that matter, buy online and return at the store if dissatisfied, multiple channels of fulfillment have to work seamlessly to achieve customer satisfaction via high speed and in cost-effective methods.
  • Data Integration with Customer Interface: Traditionally, data collected through delivery software or dispatch management software as it is also known as, was available for the purpose of logistics management and was either entirely invisible to the customer, or only visible to the extent of online tracking services. However, the fact that customers might now want end to end control of the delivery process will also have to be factored into disruptive logistical plans. For example, a customer may seek same day delivery and still have the ability to change the destination real time. This will require the logistics providers and e-commerce platforms to be fully integrated and have a customer interface with constant real time updates. Delivery software will not just be deployed to ensure value chain visibility for the supplier, but also for full disclosure to the customer

In 2012, U.S. retail e-commerce sales amounted to $225.5 billion and are projected to grow to $434.2 billion in 2017, according to Statista. The e-commerce industry witnesses new players coming on-board every year. With competition growing, it is essential to differentiate yourself from your rivals not just in terms of products but also post purchase services that drive customer satisfaction.

DRIVING GROWTH

Picture

An efficient field management system in place will not only help any e-commerce company meet targets on time, but will also help to save money. An efficient dispatch management software with a good connectivity across all the team members would ensure timely dispatch and greater efficiency on part of the workers. Forty-four percent service management professionals invest in mobile tools to provide field technicians with real-time access to required data and information in the field, while 35% integrate new technologies into existing field operations (iPads, Tablets and other devices), according to the Field Service Management Survey published in December 2013. The survey was completed globally by 45000 professionals.

An efficient service management system can be integrated with the help of web-based software and mobile software/applications. Firstly the variable affecting dispatch systems should be determined and then they should be modeled according to the upcoming targets. The variable may include time, distance, load capacity, traffic, weather, items of perishability and carrying capacity. Some of the most popular software uses GPS tracking, Cloud reporting and many such other tools. The main software could be used and monitored on a desktop which shows the current location of drivers, the deadlines that have been achieved and the ones that are yet to be covered. Productivity of drivers can be compared through charts and tables. The workers carry GPS enabled Smartphones which helps them to receive tasks, report, schedule and execute their work. Such devices which are connected to the main server of the software through a mobile application also helps in capturing field information such as texts, photos, barcodes or RFID scans, signature and more. The major upgrade that comes with such a system is that workers do not have to fill these information manually anymore, which makes this entire process time-efficient.

Such a dispatch management software automates the flow of valuable, customizable and time sensitive information ensuring accuracy, accountability, and greater profits. The data stored can be analyzed to determine loopholes and make future decisions accordingly.

CLDA GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS NEWSBREAKING NEWS:
MASSACHUSETTS DELIVERY ASSOCIATION WINS LANDMARK FEDERAL IC CASE!
 Nationwide victory for entire industry
In a hard fought victory, yesterday afternoon Judge Casper ruled in the Massachusetts Delivery Association’s (MDA) favor in its case against the MA Attorney General invalidating parts of the most restrictive IC law in the country. The ruling upholds a federal law prohibiting states from creating different rules that impact interstate commerce. The Massachusetts law effectively banned the use of independent contractors in the same day delivery market, limiting their ability to use independent contractors both to meet fluctuating customer demands for on-demand deliveries, and to staff regularly scheduled deliveries.

MDA’s lead attorney David Casey, Littler Mendelson, P.C., stated that “This case will enable those in the courier and trucking industries to choose the business models that are most efficient and responsive to the needs of the American business community and American consumers without interference from the 50 states.” In the MA “ABC” test, the B prong was, effectively, a ban on using them. The A & C prongs allow for using ICs, such contractors must be treated as such, and not unduly controlled (A prong) or prohibited from working for others (C prong).

CLDA wishes to formally to recognize and thank Michelle Cully of Xpressman Trucking & Courier who put her company’s future on the line as the test case in MDA’s Summary Judgment. CLDA also thanks the members of the MDA and its Board for their courage in moving this case forward. None if this could be done without the CLDA’s and MDA’s generous Advocacy Donors who funded this court case.

The MA Attorney General can still appeal in the next 30 days but the attorneys do not see this as a likely option at this time. The MDA still has a balance of their legal fee to pay down after an over 5 year fight; if you’d like to make a direct contribution to them please contact CLDA’s Director of Government Affairs Shawn Swearingen at: sswearingen@theclda.com.

The CLDA has shared this landmark news via a joint national news release with the MDA which we have also attached to this email. Please share the great news and the press release.

Getting the first step wrong in your delivery system can impact the overall efficiency of your delivery software, even if it is the best in the market. Perfecting your order entry is a crucial step in increasing the efficiency of your business and thereby customer satisfaction. After all, in a delivery business, quick and accurate delivery equals happy customers and greater returns.

TOP FIVE TIPS TO ACE ORDER ENTRY

Think about it, a wrong entry can create a serious challenge. It can eat into the time and when a customer’s express delivery is entered incorrectly, you potentially lose customers. So, in order to increase overall competence, your must nail that order entry process of your delivery software.

Picture

1. Understand your Order Entry Interface

To actually enter orders into your delivery software, you first need to understand and learn to use the software well. If you have employees keying in the entries, make sure that they have had proper training. While using the software, explore and test the limits of the system’s interface to ensure you are up to speed with the system.

Picture

2. Look at the Further Processes:

Think about related processes like order tracking, order billing and order documentation. After you have entered the order, these concurrent steps will be based on what you have entered. Also, when the process for a single order works through several other departments of the company, it is likely that others will use the information you have entered to carry out the further processes. So, ensure that your order entry and delivery software integrates with multiple platforms, so other departments can carry out their jobs without a glitch. This ensures that all orders are delivered, billed, and tracked properly.

3. Be Prepared for Changes:

Picture

Certain orders might have to be changed unexpectedly, or might come with special instructions, communicated later. Meaning, in such cases you might have to enter information in fields, in such a way that no changes are made to the original order. Learn to make such changes, you must be able to adapt, without losing speed or accuracy.

4. Remember the Pricing Policy:

If you enter an order with inaccurate pricing, correction issues might become tedious and can even displease customers. Further, corrections will require the delivery to be put on hold. Your company’s resources and time will be wasted and the overall effectiveness will be questioned. Always double check the price’s accuracy before submitting the order.

“What are the best ways to develop additional and different types of business from my customers?”

In these current times of economic uncertainty, many transportation companies are looking within to both streamline process and expenses, but also are still thinking of increasing revenue and solidifying their place within their markets.

If you manage a courier, messenger, trucking or other kind of freight transportation firm, you have probably in the past pondered ideas like “What are the best ways to develop additional and different types of business from my customers?” Increasing revenue from existing customers is one of the best ways to grow a service business, as you have already defined the relationship with your customers and you have the basic questions covered such a customer’s ability to timely pay it’s bill, whether they are a good customer to work with and do they have ongoing growth potential, etc.

The thought of best ways to develop additional and different types of business from your customers really gets down to what new product lines or services you can offer them. That should lead to the inevitable question: What other services do your customers buy from other transportation companies? Are other transportation/courier companies in your customers’ facilities picking up items that you can’t? Do you get the small packages but they get the bigger ones? Will those competitors eventually take your work?

If you are currently offering just one type of service (like a downtown bike messenger business), you will have challenges in offering additional services without a major make-over of your company with new services (such as On- Demand cars and vans) to sell. On the other hand, if you are primarily a routed/scheduled type of service, it may not be a huge stretch to start offering on-demand or other services.

When considering what kind of services you want to eventually provide, you have to consider a few major items that will affect your potential. First, think of what you have as a customer base:

• What is my current account base? Are they primarily a certain industry like attorneys, mortgage or air freight companies?

• Do my customers have additional deliveries they give to other transportation providers? Do I do work for attorneys but won’t serve papers? Do I do work for hospitals but won’t do lab specimens in coolers?

Second, think of what you have available to you today in the form of underused resources:

• Technology plays an important role here, as you must be able to handle any new services you offer to customers competently through your dispatch and back office functions. You might also need a web portal for your customers to access. Do you have these resources at your fingertips too?

• What office staffing infrastructure do I have currently at my disposal? Do I have underused dispatchers? Do I have any after-hours dispatchers?

• What facilities infrastructure do I have? Is there underused dock or warehouse space available to me?

• What vehicle equipment do I have at my disposal, either owned by my company or supplied by a contractor?

For most companies, there are a good number of areas in which to expand into new service offerings. This is an incredibly diverse industry by nature, so it isn’t surprising that some of the most successful businesses in our industry are very diverse themselves. This helps them do as much business as possible with any given customer, raises the value of each customer relationship and helps the company considerably in lean economic times. Below is a list of what services companies in our industry commonly offer their customers, although it is in no way comprehensive. Look at how many of these your company currently offers and others that might have potential for you, based on your current resources:

• On-Demand Couriers & Trucks

• Bike Messengers

• Routed & Scheduled Couriers

• Parcel Distribution

• White Glove Deliveries

• Critical Parts Warehousing

• Bulk Warehousing

• Inventory Management

• Pick & Pack

• Crating & Packing

• Document/Media Storage

• Cross Dock Services

• First and Last Mile Service

• Dangerous Goods (Hazmat)

• Air Freight Pickup & Delivery

• Expedited Air Freight or Air Courier (airport retrieval)

• Next Flight Out Air Courier Services

• On Board Couriers

• Airline Baggage Delivery

• Court Filing Services

• Legal Process Serving

• Medical Specimen Delivery

• LTL (Less than Truckload) Services

• Trailer Loads/Line Haul Services

• Refrigerated Delivery Services (produce, seafood, etc.)

• Dedicated Fleet Services

• Replacement Driver Services

• Mailroom/Dock Management.

Now think a bit more outside of the box. You very possibly have a number or all of the following: dispatch staff, a modern comprehensive dispatch system, communications, offices, management, back office billing, collections and accounting. What else can be done?

Consider some of these, just for a start, which some transportation companies in the past have already done: taxis, limos, airport shuttles, answering services, private postal/shipping centers distribution/shipping center for online products (like eBay large distributors), and even armored cars.

So you have managed to land yourself in the transportation Industry, but as you know it is one of the most diverse industries around. The possibilities extend in many directions for expansion, and it is also not unusual for courier/messenger/logistics businesses to do well in tight economic times as customers look for options which often include contracting out work that is currently done internally. Which way are you going to go?
